Horse Chestnut Bonsai Tree Type (Outdoors) HORSE CHESTNUT -

The horse chestnut (AESCULUS HIPPOCASTANUM) comes from Eastern Europe and the Caucuses.

STYLE : suited to every style, except formal upright and broom.

WARNING : One of the few trees best grown from seed as it is fast growing and will help to avoid ugly scars.

HORSE CHESTNUT -

REPOT : Every 2-3 years

SOIL : 80% humus rich soil and 20% coarse sand. 

PRUNE : Limit branch PRUNING to a minimum as Horse Chestnut does not easily form scar tissue.

PINCH: SHAPE the tree by trimming SHOOTS removing apical buds during winter dormancy. To stimulate new (and smaller) leaf growth cut stalks of larger LEAVES back to about one third of length.

WATER : Water well in growing season, sparingly in winter.

FEED : Apply BALANCED FEED every 15-20 days throiughout the growing season, stopping for about a month in mid summer.

WARNING : Do not allow soil to dry out while in bud, otherwise buds will drop. Protect from frost to avoid die-back or flower damage. Picture courtesy of British BONSAI>BONSAI.
