Native to eastern Asia in Japan, China and Korea, these plants differ from the Quince and the Chinese Quince in their serrated LEAVES, and in the FLOWERS which are 3-4.5 cm diaMEter, with five petals, and are usually bright orange-red, but can be white or pink; flowering is in late winter or early spring.

STYLE : Suitable for several styles but not formal upright or broom. Because of their tendency to produce SUCKERS, the predominant style tends to be "CLUMP".

WARNING : Leaving too many FRUITs on the tree can exhaust it. Too many suckers can drain energy from older parts of the tree.

Care Info

REPOT : Every 2-4 years depending on age, after flowering , or in autumn. For older plants, position in mid-depth pot and expose surface ROOTS.

SOIL : Grows well in 30:70 GRIT:organic mixture.

PRUNE : Prune to SHAPE directly after flowering. Allow new SHOOTS to grow until late sumMEr then cut hard back to two or three LEAVES.

PINCH : Cut back late growth in autumn, to about 1 or two NODEs.

WATER : Keep wet but not saturated in summer. Keep moist in winter. They should not be allowed to dry out.

FEED : BALANCED FEED in spring, low nitrogen until autumn when a single nitrogen feed may be applied.
