Bonsai Care

Classed as semi-deciduous (requires rest period during winter but does not shut down completely) tree with small bright green, oval/oblong leaves and red, pink or white flowers and succulent fruit. Its pale grey bark becomes wrinkled as it matures and trunk becomes sinuous and twisted.

STYLE : Any - except formal upright or broom.

WARNING : Flowering is on short shoots from last years wood. Take care not to prune these. Carry out wiring when shoots are green and pliable, otherwise they can be very brittle.

Care Info

REPOT : Annually before bud burst - or early autumn.

SOIL : Basic soil mix . 50:50 grit:organic.

PRUNE : Heavy pruning immediatly after flowering.

PINCH : Allow shoots to extend to 5 or 6 leaves and then prune back to 2. Do not trim shorter, round-tipped shoots.

WATER : Keep moist at all times, using rainwater as far as possible. Water well when flowering and fruiting. Reduce watering if leaves fall.

FEED : Weekly balanced feed until flowering then low nitrogen through to autumn. Apply occasional, low nitrogen at half strength if plant stays in leaf over winter.
