The horse chestnut (AESCULUS HIPPOCASTANUM) coMEs from Eastern Europe and the Caucuses.

STYLE : suited to every style, except formal upright and broom.

WARNING : One of the few trees best grown from seed as it is fast growing and will help to avoid ugly scars.

REPOT : Every 2-3 years

SOIL : 80% humus rich soil and 20% coarse sand. 

PRUNE : Limit branch PRUNING to a minimum as Horse Chestnut does not easily form scar tissue.

PINCH: SHAPE the tree by trimming SHOOTS removing apical BUD>BUDs during winter dormancy. To stimulate new (and smaller) leaf growth cut stalks of larger LEAVES back to about one third of length.

WATER : Water well in growing season, sparingly in winter.

FEED : Apply BALANCED FEED every 15-20 days throiughout the growing season, stopping for about a month in mid sumMEr.
