Deciduous, upright tree with pale grey bark and fresh green, three lobed leaves in spring changing to rich orange/red in autumn.
STYLE : Upright tree suitable for most styles but particularly good for root-over-rock.
WARNING : Roots have high moisture content and so can easily suffer frost damage. Prevent freezing of roots by over-wintering in sheltered area.

REPOT : Every 1-3 years depending on age, in early spring just prior to bud burst.
SOIL : Free draining soil such as Akadama
PRUNE : Early spring, a couple of weeks prior to repotting. Mid summer branch pruning drives strong adventituious growth.
PINCH : Should be carried out throughout the growing season.
WATER : Daily throughout growing season but infrequently during winter months to prevent frost damage to the roots.
FEED : Balanced feed during spring summer. Low nitrogen in autumn as nitrogen will reduce foliage colour intensity.
